Seaweed Painting
Seaweed Painting

Seaweed paintings are a great addition to a “sea” display that you might have in your classroom. They’re very easy to do and can be done by any age student.
Materials Needed:
- white or light green construction paper
- green and yellow paint
- sponges
Preparation
None needed before class, but you need to spend a bit of time cutting after the paint has dried.
This took about 15 minutes for my class of 12.
In Class
- Pass out the paper and sponges.
- In paint tray, put a bit of green and yellow paint, so that it’s touching, but not mixed.
- Demonstrate to the students how they can get a bit of each color on their sponges and use the sponges to paint on the paper.
- Let them paint to their heart’s content.
- After paint has dried, cut the paper into seaweed. Use the area that they painted as a guideline. You’ll find that there are sort of natural “blobs” of paint that lend themselves well to seaweed.
After you’ve got your seaweed, hang it on the wall as part of a larger sea theme.
